This is an old article from 2004 (or so).
Yeah, I just noticed that, Chris. Still pretty interesting, though.
And apologies to everyone for posting this story twice this week. When you blog every day, sometimes it’s easy to miss duplicates.
That article is from issue #833 they are on issue #893 now. It was from 2005.
I am very new to this site and I hope the other members will indulge me for a very important request rather than a comment. My name is John Sorensen and I am trying desperately to locate any information that deals with the Bleecker Street Cinema from approximatly 1964-1968. The reason for my request is because in the mid 60s my father had an extremely close friend named Lionel Rogosin. The had attended the same prep school when they were teenagers. In the mid 60s they got together one weekendat our house in Madison Ct. and made a comedy short (about 20 min.). It was a fil about a catholic priest who goes to the home of a wealthy alcoholic to solicit a large donation for the church. There apparently was no script and the entire film was adlibed. My father has since passed away and my older brother got any estate my father left behind. (there wasn’t much in the way of memorabilia pertaining to that period of our lives. my problem is I was to young and don’t remember much of anything about it. I was readingthe comments today and ran accross a piece by “Rudy Franchi” written on Nov.28,2004. He mentioned that he had taken charge of the Bleecker Street Cinema in the 60s for Lionel Rogosin. That is the very first reference to Lionel Rogosin or the Cinema in the same sentence since I started my search. If anyone can help me find out what I am looking for, I can’t tell you how much I would appreciate it.
What I am actually looking for is any and all information pertaining to Bleecker Street Cinema, Lionel Rogosin and the two actors in the films. The first film was entitled,“How Do You Like Them Bananas” and the second film which was a full length film was entitled “Oysters Are In Season”, the actors were Edward (Swede) Sorensen, my father, and Dean Preese,(Excuse the spelling). If anyone can help me out please let me know at, ()
I hope to here from you soon
Thankyou all for listening
John E. Sorensen
Unfortunately it is an old article, but none the less it is interesting to see how showmanship can make ones theatre more of an enjoyable experience. Earlier this week I posted a story on an expansion of the Central Mall 8 theatres in Salina, Kansas, which will expand to 10 screens over the fall. Note that one screen will seat 80 and the other 60, the screen sizes have to be small, and many homes have large screen televisions which will be larger than the new auditoriams at this theatre. The exhibitor today HAS to GIVE the movie going public a REASON to patronize their theatres. This story emphases what exhibitors can do to give the public a reason to go to the movies. While the Central Mall 10 will be just another boring shopping mall experience.
john you need to post this on blecker st cinema page also ,,
This theatre reeks of body fluid stench in the back row.
It may be an old article, but it is interesting to see that a publication like Entertainment Weekly might possibly “get it” – that it’s all about the experience, stupid! Of course, we have known that all along, right gang??

You must mean the Castro near Downtown Frisco.
