Work in a Movie Palace

posted by warrendewey on February 3, 2006 at 4:14 am

The Golden State Theatre in Monterey, California is looking for a knowledgeable and creative new manager. We are basically an independent revival house with 1 to 3 shows daily and a few live onstage events every month.

Major work is finished on the restoration, and we need someone to manage day to day operations. I hope to find someone who loves film and live performance, and has experience with film booking practices, projection, lighting — basically the art and craft of presenting a good show.

The position entails ensuring professional film and live theater presentation, working with outside producers, interfacing with the public, supervising advertising and graphics, and pretty much whatever else you want to get involved with. It’s a very challenging job, but Monterey is a great place to live and the Golden State is a beautiful 1926 atmospheric theater with 1000 seats, a 36' screen, and a Wurlitzer pipe organ.

The job is salaried and includes medical benefits. Please see our website and contact Warren Dewey by email at if you are interested.

The Wurlitzer pipe organ mentioned above is privately owned (by me)
and is not the property of the theatre. The instrument has been used from time to time for various theatre events.

Tom: The Golden Theatre website is very well done and very informative though I would like to think that the original or a reproduction vertical STATE sign could be returned to its original location as seen in the vintage b/w photos.

Patsy—The theatre opened without a blade sign and remained so until 1929 when that monstrous ugly 4-story contraption was added to the facade.

Since this posting site is for the search for a new manager at the GST, we should carry this or any theatre history conversation on the Cinema Treasures page for the Monterey State Theatre (which I cannot get to right now because the Cinema Treasures theatre locator page is overloaded—again.)

Ok, that sounds like a good plan!

Tom et al.,

Fridays can, unfortunately, be a rough day here for the site when we are frequently overloaded. I had planned on posting something about that, but preempted it for the Leeds news, etc.

Monday will probably be the day for a statement about the site and load issues.

Thanks for your patience,

Warren, you might get some good professional candidates if you advertise with the International Association of Assembly Managers and with the League of Historic Theatres. They have job listings for professional theatre managers. Good luck
