“No More Joy” Documentary Available on DVD

“The documentary "No More Joy” – The Rise and Fall of New Orleans' Movie Theatres is now available on DVD. “No More Joy” is a wonderful documentary about the history of movie theatres in New Orleans.
Centered around the closing of the Joy on Canal Street back in 2003, Rene' Brunet, the oldest living exhibitor of New Orleans reminisces of the days when there was a theatre in every neighborhood. The film brings out how social changes, technology, and the distribution of films contributed to the rise and fall of movie theatres in New Orleans. With interviews from others in the movie industry, personal picture collections and articles from exhibitors and The Times Picayune, the story is told from the beginning to the present.
The film was completed in 2004 before hurricane Katrina struck. Please visit www.nomorejoy.com for reviews and purchase. The price is $15 and the filmmakers' proceeds will go to the hurricane relief charities in the New Orleans area."

I just visited the No More Joy website and found it to be very interesting and very well done. My hat is off to the filmmakers for putting together such a wonderful piece of N.O. movie palace history. Congratulations and I hope that sales soar as proceeds will go to the hurricane relief charities in the N.O. area which is so important now!
I purchased a copy of “No More Joy” and congratulate the makers on producing such a worthy and entertaining film on New Orleans cinemas and theatres.
Every true cinema/theatre aficionado should have a copy in his collection.

I think I’m going to order this dvd. It sounds very sad, but enlightening. Plus, its for a very good cause. I wonder if there is any mention of the theater Ignatius Reilly frequented in the Confederacy of Dunces.
Since I first posted on this link I’m glad to see so many other posts and generated interst. THSA is having their winter board meeting in Chicago this weekend and they will be reviewing it.
What a wonderful DVD. I am so glad I purchased it. I only wish other cities like NYC and Phila would do a documentary on all the wonderful theaters they lost.
hello- im from the uk and just bought the no more joy dvd- im looking forward to watching it and sometime this week will give it a viewing – it arrived very fast from lulu press- on bbc news today they did a small story on new orleans and the joy could be seen in a road full of water as the camera panned out – you could see the marquee – this was on bbc news – as the dvd was shot before the storms does anyone know its current condition please thanks –
I really wanted to like this movie since I’m from New Orleans…but I didn’t. It was slow, repetitive, and a bit amateurish I’m sad to say. Had a few good photos from the early days in the city but not the quality I’ve seen in other documentaries re: film / theatres. Check out ‘Reel Talk’ and ‘Life & Times Of The Drive-In Theatre.’
