Hope everyone had a great holiday!
As you can see, Cinema Treasures is back online and hopefully a little bit speedier. While we can’t yet say we’ve licked our performance problems, we definitely made some great progress over the past few days.
Most significantly, theater pages are now being cached, which is helping reduce the load on our server quite a bit. We also made a number of other changes which hopefully will bear fruit over the coming days.
Thanks again for your patience!

To be honest, I’ve never noticed the slow downs that are mentioned here. I pretty much check back to see what comments are posted after I submit mine, or glance at the new submissions, especially if they are local theaters (DC, MD or VA).
THANK YOU, GUYS. THIS WONDERFUL SITE BRINGS BACK A LOT OF GREAT MEMORIES. NO COMPLAINTS HERE AT ALL. Keep On, Keeping On. Jerry
The site seems to be wonderfully improved. Response is much faster. I enjoy the fine work you do so much. I have learned a lot by researching theatres on this site. Thank you.
The site has been humming all day, so far. Good work. Happy to have it back in proper order (knock wood).
Again, I would like to express my thanks for the continued work and effort Patrick, Ross, and staff keep putting into CINEMA TREASURES. It has turned out to be one of the top web sites on the internet. It is uniquely creative, informative, and educational. C.T. has been a positive force in bringing an awareness to countless people of the need to save former movie palaces, which are national treasures and part of our country’s heritage. Through its members, it has exposed important historical cultural information on this subject that should be remembered and appreciated.
Cinema Treasures is very nice but i have noticed some articles that well, is quite bad for the site. This site is for the preservation and other important work for theaters but i noticed in your section Lawford Theater, there are a number of people using it for a forem where they lash out at each other,, there is nothing productive about that, and i dont agree with letting that kind of badgering to be on here. There is also mention of a new couple buying and running it and doing lots of work on it, also, its showing closed when in fact, its open,,, just something i wanted to say, thanks!
Yay caching! The site seems much speedier to me, so far.
To Lost Memory: The discrepancy you noticed in the number of updated theatres from one page to another is probably not a bug; it’s most likely just characteristic of the way caching works on the site. You’ll notice that the list of recent comments differs on various pages, too. I suspect this is because a page is re-cached complete, including its sidebar, at the time a new comment is made. Thus, the recent comments and updated theatres and all the other sections in the sidebars are cached just as they are at that moment. If you go from a page which was cached five minutes ago, it shows sidebar updates to that moment. If you then go to a page that was cached twenty minutes earlier, that page will show the sidebar updates as they were those twenty minutes ago.
This could probably be changed if the sidebars are loaded separately from the rest of the page, but it might not be worth the trouble to make the major change in the site’s design that might be needed to do that, merely to eliminate something that isn’t really much of a problem. Personally, I don’t mind the discrepancies at all. They’re a small price for such a great improvement in performance.
That’s a very good theory, Joe. You must be a web developer!
But, actually… the caching system is pretty advanced. Things that need to be dynamic (like Who’s Online, Updated Theaters, etc.) are still dynamic — everything else is cached.
We made a few tweaks yesterday, so that’s probably why I’m not seeing the behavior that Lost Memory described.
Ah, much improved. I see that the recent comments are no longer showing discrepancies either. The caching system is more sophisticated than I’d expected.
Much improved; however, if I hit the “Next Button” when the most recent theaters list is on the screen, the site is very slow to move to the next page.
FABULOUS SITE!! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
