New Legit Theater Replacing Water Tower Theatre

CHICAGO, IL — The new Drury Lane Theatre at the Water Tower Place shopping center on Michigan Avenue and Chestnut Street is nearing its opening early in 2005, according to this report from the Chicago Tribune.

The legitimate theater, which is based in suburban Oakbrook (and recently closed its long-time Evergreen Park theater, which is set to be replaced by a Wal-Mart), has chosen the artistic director and producer and is hiring the remaining staff from local theater companies.

The Water Tower Drury Lane is being built in the space which until a year ago was a three-screen movie house operated by Village Theatres which was showing art films when it was shuttered. Village began operating the theater in 2002 after Loews Cineplex closed it in 2001. Four other screens that had been closed earlier in another part of the mall have since been converted into retail space.

Drury Lane had operated a live “theatre in the round” style venue at Water Tower Place in the 70s around the time the mall first opened, which was later closed. The new Drury Lane theater will be about half the size of their original theater, at 575 seats, and will be designed in a traditional theater style.
