HAMILTON, ONTARIO — A section of the wall on the south side of the landmark Tivoli Theatre collapsed on June 29th in the evening hours, according to the Toronto Star. Fortunately, no one was in the Tivoli and no one was injured, according to fire crews.

When fire and police personnel arrived at the building, after it was reported that smoke was coming from the Tivoli, they found the large hole in the building. The city’s structural engineers are currently determining whether or not the roof is in danger of caving in.

What is now the Tivoli was originally an 1870s building with stores on the bottom floor and a carriage factory above. It was turned into a theater called the Wonderland in 1908, renamed the Colonial a year later, and again renamed the Princess in 1913. It was the first movie theater in Hamilton, and the first in all of Canada to show sound films. The Tivoli was closed by Famous Players in 1989 and afterwards leased to various theatrical groups.

Wow. I am sorry to hear about the wall. Hope that it is found to be repairable. Old Theatres certainly touch hearts. I truly hope all works out well for the Tivoli’s future. Keep us all posted!
