Somerville Theatre Celebrates 90th Birthday

SOMERVILLE, MA — The historic Somerville Theatre in Davis Square, a local entertainment fixture since 1914, will be celebrating its birthday in style this year.
May 11 marks the theater’s 90th anniversary, and in honor of the occasion, the picture palace will host a special presentation of John Ford’s classic film “The Grapes of Wrath”, along with selected vintage short subjects.
The festivities take place at 7:30 p.m. and cost of admission is the old-fashioned price of $1.00, so don’t miss this opportunity to see a great film on a big screen in one of the Boston area’s most treasured neighborhood theaters.
Unique among local movie-houses, the Somerville Theatre is one of the last independently owned theaters in greater Boston. Renovations have provided four new movie screens, each decorated in a funky eclectic style, while the original vintage auditorium, replete with balcony and stage, hosts live events as well as movies.
From Busby Berkeley directing stage shows there in the roaring 20’s to Bruce Springsteen’s amazing performances in February of 2003, the variety of talent that has come to Davis Square is remarkable. The Somerville remains a local favorite not only for the quality of the entertainment, but also for its notoriously low ticket and food prices. Weekday movies are only $4.00, with evening and weekend prices a reasonable $6.00.
Though it struggles to compete with the local chain theaters, the Somerville has remained a fixture in the area’s movie scene for almost a century and will continue to do so by providing a non-corporate and old-fashioned atmosphere in which to enjoy the show. 90 years after opening its doors, the Somerville Theatre continues to do what it was built for: entertain the community with movies and live events.
