Milwaukee’s Oriental to Host Silent Film Weekend

MILWAUKEE , WI — The venerable Oriental Theatre will have another of its monthly ‘Silents Please’ series of not-so-silent movies this Saturday the 10th, titled: “The Last Laugh” (1924) starring Emil Jannings and it is an odd opus as this description from Maltin’s Movie Guide makes clear:

“Silent film classic told entirely by camera, without title cards. Jannings plays proud doorman at posh hotel who is suddenly demoted; film details his utter and grievous humiliation. Brilliantly filmed …with a towering performance by Jannings.”

So, if you are in the mood for a moody piece that is a classic, you might well enjoy this weekend’s offering, especially accompanied by the almost 40 ranks of the largest Kimball theatre pipe organ to be seen in a theater.

There are also always surprises at every showing; sometimes a personality of the stage and screen, sometimes a dance band, sometimes a performer, but always lots of fun! For the price of $8 for adults and $5.50 for kids 12 and under it is a bargain at today’s prices.

Shows always start at 1:PM and the theatre is at 2230 N. Farwell Ave., just north of downtown, and only about six blocks in from the lake.

The forecast is for possible snow flurries that day (no, this isn’t Washington DC with cherry blossoms blooming!), so it might be the perfect way to get in out of the weather! Further information is available from the sponsor, the Kimball Theatre Organ Soc., at: or via the Silents Please line at: 262-634-8394.

Have a great time!!
