When Loews Cineplex opened the South Towne Center Cinemas on November 2, 1990, it was the largest theatre complex in the Salt Lake area at that time. It was located at the corner of the parking lot of the South Towne Mall and featured ten well appointed and designed auditoriums seating 2,358 patrons.
The auditoriums ranged in size from 318 seats in the larger auditoriums to 189 in the smaller ones. Six of the auditoriums featured Dolby Stereo and digital was later added.
The lobby and concession areas featured refined marble floors and walls, there were bright wall decorations and multilevel ceiling lighting.
The theatre was closed in February 2001 as part of Loews' bankruptcy. It was gutted in 2002 and is now used for retail.
