The Rye Theater was opened on April 23, 1921 with Thomas Meighan in “The Easy Road”. The architect of this charming Colonial Revival style theater was Harry Leslie Walker. By 1927 it was renamed Playhouse Theatre and was operated by Playhouse Operating Co.
By 1941 it was operated by the Prudential Circuit and known as the Playhouse when the Film Daily Yearbook gives a seating capacity of 621. It was also known as Rye Playhouse. It was destroyed by fire on August 11. 1951.
