Designed by Robert Boller of the Boller Brothers the Elkin opened in 1937 seating more than 800 when it opened.
It is currently used by a local troupe for live performances. A remodel in the 60’s which reduced the number of seats to 500. After the theatre closed as a movie house the lobby was used for some time as a coffee house. When the lease ran out the coffee house operators did not renew it. The theatre group then stepped in and is still using the theatre.
The theatre itself has a two story front with a triangle marquee with Elkin on both sides. It also has a nice sized vertical sign with Elkin running down each side in neon. The marquee and the vertical are a medium color blue with red trim. The front is in Art Deco style.
There is a preservation effort going on and a feasibility study in the process at this time to renovate the theatre. The Elkin is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Some of the information on the Elkin Theatre is incorrect; address, year of opening, current use, etc. How can we correct the information?

The Elkin Theatre at 110 W.Commerce has been owned by a group of about 100 families since 1986, and has been in the process of renovation since then. The Mississippi Arts Commission awarded the Elkin a grant several years ago to install central heat and air conditioning in the historic theatre, and the organization recently installed surround sound in the auditorium. The Elkin opened in 1937. Current seating is 455 in the main auditorium. The staff shows current films on Friday and Saturday evenings. It is a non-profit organization and all staffing is by volunteers. Other events at the Elkin include concerts, plays, seminars, fashion shows, art shows by the local school,an annual Rotary Club Scholars Reception, an active Elkin Childrens Theatre group, which will present “The Wizard of Oz” in the summer of 2005, ticket sales for events such as the Annual Pilgimage of Homes, etc., working to be a “Center for the Arts” for the small community.

Can anyone shed any light on this item from Boxoffice of February 10, 1940? “Aberdeen — Earl Elkin opened a new 750-seater. It is called the Elkin Junior.”
