The Universal Cineplex was opened June 11, 1999 with a total of 4,644-seats. A spectacular Orlando area multiplex featuring wall to wall screens, state of the art projection and digital sound. The theater has high backed rocking chairs, and is a pleasure to see a movie in. It was taken over by Cinemark on September 15, 2018.

It is located in the Universal Studios City Walk area.

Was this an antitrust issue and why Cinemark is taking over moviebuff82?

I don’t really know if that would be competition with the Disney multiplex as many guests stay on site at Disney, (or in the area of Universal), that both theaters could easily survive seperately. The only way they “compete” would be in terms of locals, but there are plenty of tourists at either location.

There is a 20 screen Cinemark across the highway. I wonder if they will close that location once this one reopens. The mall it was attached to has closed. Because of that I doubt it’s due to anti trust as the Disney location is far enough away that it does not compete directly.

Over my visits to the theatre during different years, never saw the theatre at Universal crowded, usually empty. My guess AMC didn’t want to spend money on upgrading the Orlando location. They did a renovation in the Universal Hollywood location. Downtown Disney Springs AMC is much more busier than Orlando, They now have reserved seating in all auditoriums.

On April 22, 2011, a 33-year-old man from Winter Haven was found unconscious in front of the Universal Cineplex after being tased by an off-duty Orange County Sheriff officer due to disorderly conduct. The man was then taken to Dr. P. Phillips Hospital and later died.

Interesting. Speaking of competition: CityWalk Orlando is a Cinemark but CityWalk Los Angeles/Hollywood is AMC! Disney Springs is AMC but the largest multiplex down the street from Disneland in Anaheim/Orange is Century Cinemark! FYI.

The Century Stadium is a 15 minute drive from DisneYland. It’s not as though it’s located in Downtown Disney, which is a quick walk from both Disneyland Park and DCA. Referring it to ‘down the street’ is misleading.
