The Smithtown Theatre was operated by Prudential Circuit in the 1940’s. UA operated this for many years as a discount house usually day and dating with Lindenhurst and Northport. There was a period in the 1980’s when they booked first run here for awhile. (it might have been when the Smith Haven Mall was being quaded). “Hannah and Her Sisters” was one of the films that opened first run here, and did very well. On November 1, 2001 UA closed the theatre with Jackie Chan in “Rush Hour 2”.
A year later it was renovated and opened as a live playhouse.

Definitely worth the long drive from Port Jeff for that discount! I could even be persuaded to take in something slightly high-brow in my youth like Nell. The structure itself, probably crumbling but it’s an impressive sight.
The physical structure appears to be in good shape; the financial is another story. They are trying to raise funds to keep the place open. I think they need something like a quarter million.

Do they still show Rocky Horror here?
ease update, theatre closed as a movie theatre on September 13, 2001
The marquee is announcing the theatre has been saved which is wonderful news. The productions here are wonderful, I go to see every show that plays here.
The Smithtown actually closed as a movie theater on November 1, 2001 with “Rush Hour 2”.
Interior had a garden theme. Purportedly designed by the same people that did Radio City Music Hall.
