Baxter Theatre

The Baxter Theatre was opened January 3, 1948 with Johnny Weissmuller in “Tarzan and the Huntress”. My great-grandmother, Ima Evans owned and operated it until it closed December 21, 1978. My great-grandparents also owned/operated the Evans Theatre for years before building the Baxter Theatre. It became a bank and also used for storage. By 2022 it was in commercial use.

As of February 2008, the theater building is being used by First Security Bank for training purposes.

Is this the theatre that was near the Wal Mart?
If so, I saw Cannonball Run, and Superman II while on my senior summer vacation, while visiting grandparents.

The former theater is now one of two buildings on the block occupied by First Security Bank. I’m not sure what the bank uses this building for, as their retail operation for Mountain Home appears to be in the building across Baker Street, but it might contain offices as the south wall has been fenestrated. The distinctive masonry detailing on the facade is still there, though it is now painted gray.

The Baxter opened its doors with “Tarzan And The Huntress” along with a couple of short subjects and a special display of lights before showing.

The Baxter Theatre closed its doors with a two-day showing of John Denver in “Oh God” (which is originally scheduled to be shown for six days).
