Rustic Drive-INĀ©...Brownfield Texas

The Rustic Drive-In was opened January 30, 1951. It seems like the Rustic Drive-In was in Brownfield forever. It had a playground complete with merry-go-round slide and metal horses on springs. They had great chili french fries and Wednesday was bingo night. You could sit outside in front of the concession stand in metal lawn chairs. Sometimes we went to actually watch the show, sometimes we didn’t!

I remember cars being lined up down the Plains, Texas highway and it being cheap enough to get in but we would still pile four or five people in the car trunk and sneak in. It was closed in the summer of 1983. Sadly, it has been leveled.

Approx. location for this drive-in was east of 1724 U.S. 380. The outline though barely visible is still there.

Boxoffice, Dec. 3, 1955: “A blaze which firemen said followed an explosion of a butane stove took the life of John H. Howze, 88, and destroyed the Rustic Drive-In on Highway 287 west of here. The butane stove was in an apartment under the screen of the theatre. Howze, a retired farmer, lived alone in the apartment. Firemen did not know he was inside until they found his body after the fire was out. High winds fanned the blaze and hampered firefighting efforts. Damage to the drive-in was estimated at $20,000.”
