The Luxor Theatre opened in 1923, with seating for over 1,450, designed in the Egyptian style. It was located on E. 170th Street near Grand Concourse in the Mt. Eden section of the Bronx. It was operated by the Consolidated Amusement Company chain
After closing, the former Luxor Theatre served as a liquor store and is now a supermarket.

The Luxor has the distinction of being the Bronx outlet for the first Premiere Showcase in 1962.

We went to the Luxor Theater two weeks ago and the orchestra floor houses a supermarket. You can notice forms of the balcony repainted in black. Managers kindly led us to the upper part which is used as storage space and the original ceiling and plaster works are still there, in clean state despite it was repainted in white.
Background on the name Luxor: Is an anglicization of the Arabic “Al Uqsor,” meaning, “The Castle.” This is in reference to the ruins of a Roman legion fortress, which, at the time of the Arab conquest of Egypt in the 7th Century, were still standing around the already very ancient temple built there in Pharaonic times by Amenhotep III, Rameses II, and others. Later, the town which existed there took on the name. Since is is easily pronounced by Westerners, and perhaps due to its similarity to things bringing to mind “luxury,” is has been a popular name to associate with Egyptian things.

Three robbers escaped with $2,200 from the safe of the Luxor Theatre, a moving picture house at 208 East 170th Street, the Bronx, yesterday afternoon, after they had been led to the theatre office by a credulous doorman to whom they said thay were revenue men performing their duty.
There should be a supermarket function, instead of being lumped into retail. Retail can be a tiny storefront, whereas supermarket implies at least a medium-sized building.
Had my best childhood memories in that movie theatre ,we would go early and spend the whole day in there and watch a movie and cartoons all day for .25 cents ,Damn I feel old but of course I am not lol
