This appears to be a two-story turn of the century brick commercial bulding that was turned into the Theatorium on September 4, 1911. The ground floor has a facade done in the stacked stone (thin slabs of multicolored sandstone, etc.) that was popular back then. On September 30, 1928 it was renamed Granada Theatre. On April 1, 1934 it was renamed Roxy Theatre. It was closed by Landmark Cinemas of Canada in 1980.
The marquee is still up, but has no neon left. It’s been painted white, so it’s hard to tell what the design may have been. It is now the Roxy Youth and Activity Center, which I got the impression was church-affiliated.

It is amazing how many theatres are named ROXY as inspired by the once famous name of the New York City panjandrum of the movie palace: Samuel Lionel Rothapfel = “Roxy”. His namesake was the famous, 6000-seat ROXY THEATRE in NYC, which outlasted him by only 25 years when it was demolished in 1960. The whole story is nowhere better told than in that landmark book “The Best Remaining Seats: The Story of the Golden Age of the Movie Palace” by the late Ben M. Hall in 1961. Various editions of it are sometimes available from www.Amazon.com, but only the first edition contains the color plates, though many libraries have, or can order, copies of it. The Theatre Historical Soc. of America ( www.HistoricTheatres.org ) was his legacy, and they have much data/photos of the ROXY..

A Roxy Theatre in Lewiston was mentioned in published sources as early as 1941. I’d assume it was this theater. I’ve also come across mention of a Rex Theatre in Lewiston operating in 1932. Possibly an aka for the Roxy? The signage would have been cheap to change.

The old Roxy brings back a lot of memories. I grew up in Lewiston in the early 1950’s and I remember going to the Roxy on Saturday afternoons. There were movies like The Durango Kid, Roy and Gene, Bowery Boys and all kinds of B movies they showed a few years later on on late night TV. And the serials like Rocketman, Superman, Batman and many more. Admission was 25 cents and If I had a dime left I would get some Flicks chocolate. If I only had a nickel it was Life Savers or a Tootsie Roll. Great times.
