Rio Theatre

The Rio Theatre launched on December 22, 1939 with “Man About Town”. The Streamline Moderne style, neon-covered venue replaced William Conway’s former theater in the same spot as the former Rio Theatre that was destroyed on April 13, 1939. That theatre had been better known as the Arcade Theatre. It began service on September 24, 1925 with “The Ten Commandments.”

The Rio Theatre was given a major refresh in 1949. The only downgrade is that the dual-window concession stand which also served passers-by was closed to non-theatre patrons. It discontinued advertising following the February 3, 1975 showing of “Wonder of it All”.
