Kingsville residents Gary Hogarth and F.O. Graham opened Essex’s Rio Theatre on December 2, 1936. The 50ft x 130ft building is constructed in stucco, brick, and tile trimmings.
The Rio Theatre was Essex’s first-run house, but during its final years of operation alongside daily mainstream Hollywood, the Rio Theatre began showing German movies and newsreels on Saturday evenings only. The Rio Theatre closed in March 1965, and the entire theater went up on sale.
