Lyric Theatre

Exeter’s Leavitt’s Theatre was built on the site of a dome skating rink, and opened its doors on October 16, 1931 with Lawrence B. Tibbett in “The Prodigal” along with an unnamed Laurel & Hardy comedy and an unnamed cartoon, featuring RCA Photophone sound.

The Leavitt’s Theatre was constructed in cement, steel, and brick, with the front out of red rug brick with three panels of buff stucco, and is all fireproof. The auditorium housed 357 seats all in the orchestra level, with tinted rich green plastered walls with rose pillars, rose velvet drapes, and four exits to the building all plainly visible with electric signs. The original screen was edged with black and white draperies of green surrounding it, and the stage featured footlights and the size permits on putting on performing arts on rare occasions.

The Leavitt’s Theatre was renamed the Lyric Theatre in 1949, and lasted for a little more than a decade until closing in the Spring of 1963.
