Mustang Drive-In

The Sunset Drive-In opened its gates on April 30, 1954 with Clifton Webb in “Stars and Stripes Forever” along with an unnamed cartoon. The Sunset Drive-In was originally operated by the husband-and-wife team of Mr. and Mrs. H.J. Sutherland of St. Mary’s, who also operated the Park Theatre and Capital Theatre in Goderich, and several theatres in Clinton, Mitchell and Seaforth. The Sunset Drive-In was first managed by George Thompson of Exeter, who also operated the town’s Lyceum Theatre.

Famous Players would briefly take over the Sunset Drive-In who renamed it “Mustang Drive-In” that same year in 1970. After only two seasons, Astral Communications purchased the Mustang Drive-In in February 1972, alongside the Park Theatre and 11 other drive-ins.

The Mustang Drive-In closed for the final time on September 8, 1987 with “Back to the Beach” and “Beverly Hills Cop Part II”, and was last managed by Paul Wheeler who also managed the Park Theatre. Premiere Theatres Canada was its last operator.
