Plaza Theatre

Located in the City Centre. The 1,200-seat Princess Theatre was opened in 1913. In 1928 it had a big hit screening Al Jolson in “The Singing Fool”. It suffered major damage from a fire in 1938. The interior was renovated in an Art Deco style. It was purchased by Amalgamated Theatres and reopened as the Plaza Theatre. In 1958 the Plaza Theatre was the first cinema in Auckland to be equipped with 70mm film. The Plaza Theatre holds the record for the longest run in cinema history in New Zealand when Julie Andrews in “The Sound of Music” played from 8th April 1965 to 29th September 1966 (77 weeks). The Plaza Theatre was closed in 1983 and was demolished.

An office tower with retail at ground level now stands on the site.
