Located in the east Berlin district of Plenzlauer Berg adjacent to the popular 700-seat Prater Beer Garden which is the oldest beer garden in Berlin, having opened in 1837 presenting theatre and variety performances. Films were screened in the Prater Beer Garden on 3rd March 1903 and continued for many years.

The Prater-Lichtspiele was opened 1929 and was designed by architect Walter Treder. In 1949 under Communist rule of East Berlin it was renamed Defa-Filmtheatre hosting premieres of major Russian films and this continued until 1965.

Since 1995 it has reverted back to its original Prater name, in use as a live theatre.
