Round Mountain Theatre

The Owl Theatre in Covelo, California, was open by October 1915, when it was mentioned in Moving Picture World magazine. Lovell and James L. Durnford bought the Owl Theatre from E. M. Durnford in the autumn of 1932, remodeling it with a new screen and increased seating capacity. (At the time, Film Daily Year Book listed it with a capacity of 210.) J. W. Taylor bought the Owl Theatre in 1937 and remodeled again, renaming it the Covelo Theatre.

The Ukiah Republican Press reported in July 1946 that the Covelo Theatre had moved “across the street from its old location” (wherever that was) to give the Woman’s Improvement Club a chance to improve “the grounds on the south side of the Clubhouse”.

By 1950, Harold C. Tuttle was operating the Covelo Theatre, soon renamed the Round Mountain Theatre. He added a 24x11-foot metal CinemaScope screen in 1955 as part of another remodeling.

Tuttle died in 1957, and his widow continued running the Round Mountain Theatre until selling it to Robert Conner in 1965. In the summer of 1967, the Round Mountain Theatre closed for good, despite Audrey Tuttle’s efforts to find a lessee.
