Sequoia Theatre

The Sequoia Theatre was opened in 1908. Around 1915 it was enlarged to seat 400-seats. The American Motion Picture Directory 1914-15 lists the Sequoia Theatre at the corner of North McPherson Street and East Laurel Street. Sanborn Maps 1919 show Moving Pictures at 220 East Laurel Street at the corner of North McPherson Street.

1913 and beyond advertisements in the Fort Bragg Advocate stated “The Pioneer Picture House. First Established Motion Picture Theatre in Northern California.”

The Fort Bragg Mendocino Historical Society has an historical photo of the Sequoia Theatre on their website, which matches the building still there which, at one time was home to the Footlighters Play House and Mendocino Coast Television (MCTV).

The Mendocino Voice reported In March 2021 that the building was bought at auction for $210,000 by Glenn Neutren, a retired electrician. Mr. Neutron had no specific plans for the building except fixing it up.

The October 23, 1915 issue of Moving Picture World used most of one page for an article headed “Competition Keen at Fort Bragg, Cal.” which includes this information about the Sequoia: “The house has been conducted almost steadily since 1908 under different managements, and not long ago was remodeled and enlarged. It has a seating capacity of four hundred and boasts a small balcony, a ladies' rest room and a commodious office in front with a fireplace that assists in heating the house in winter. A motor-driven Simplex machine is installed in the operating room, where there is also a mercury arc rectifier.”
