Mayland Theatre

The 1,600-seat Mayland Theatre, with a round Streamline Moderne style marquee, opened on August 26, 1948 with an unknown Hollywood sneak preview. The following day the main feature move was Bing Crosby in “The Emperor Waltz”. On November 22, 1972 it was twinned under General Cinema ownership to the plans of William Riseman Associates.

GCC closed the Mayland Theatre on August 8, 1989 with “Dead Poets Society” & “Star Trek V”. A Barnes and Noble bookstore later occupied the building, with huge neon Barnes and Noble letters replacing the Mayland letters on the marquee. In 1999, Barnes and Noble relocated to Richmond Mall, and the Mayland Theatre building became vacant again.

In 2006, it became a Boneyard Restaurant, which closed in early summer of 2014. It became an arcade and was demolished in November 2020.

The Boneyard closed early last summer after about an 8 year run and the space is now called Play Arcade and Kitchen.

Just read that Play Arcade and Kitchen will be closed as of March 1st. According to the article in Cleve Scene, they’re blaming the age of the building and required repairs for its closing.

Also would like to add that General Cinema closed the Mayland down in August 1989. General Cinema announced plans in 1988 to open a multiplex at the nearby Eastgate Shopping Center, but it never happened. It wasn’t until 1996 that Eastgate would get a theater when Regal opened a 10 screen theater behind Micro Center.

I drove by it the other day and the west wall was partially still up. So even though the demolition started around November 12th, it was still going on a month later till around December 14-15th.

It first opened with an unknown Hollywood sneak preview, but its first attraction was the following day with Bing Crosby in “Emperor Waltz” along with an unnamed Popeye, an unnamed Screen Song, and an unnamed musical short.

The Mayland as a single-screener originally housed 1,600 seats.
