This storefront nickelodeon appears on a 1911 Sanborn map of Newton. It was on the south side of the Courthouse Square, and had two rivals, the Lyric Theatre on the west side of the square and the Electric Theatre on the north side. The latter two survived at least until 1914, but by then this house had closed. The building still stands and is in use for retail sales.

A post on the “Get to Know Newton” Facebook page reveals that this house was called the Star Theatre. Upstairs in the same building was the Modern Woodmen of America lodge hall, which had been built around 1880. On a 1906 Sanborn map, the downstairs was vacant, so the theater opened sometime between then and 1911, but probably before 1911.

Apple Maps is having trouble placing this theater. We should probably go with the alternate address of 109 1st Ave. W.

Nobody ever uses the highway as an address until they are well out of town. Google is obsessed with giving fictitious addresses like that.
