Calexico 10 Theatre

Los Angeles based Metropolitan Theatres Circuit opened the Calexico 10 Theatre in the peak of the megaplex era of cinema exhibition in 1999. Metro had been in the Corwin family since 1923 with some legacy single-screeners and some newer facilities. The venue was about 3 miles from the border of Mexico in northern Calexico, California.

The Calexico 10 was known as a popular price, first run theater with showtimes around $5 each even with new release titles. The venue closed for the COVID-19 pandemic on March 16, 2020. It reopened a full year later on March 28, 2021. As theatres struggled to comeback post-COVID, single-purpose multiplexes such as the Calexico 10 were challenged by streaming and a new era of Family Entertainment Destination Center (FEC) locations.

The Calexico 10 Theatre faced tough competition from the Cinemark El Centro built in 2005 that had far superior amenities just seven miles north. Metropolitan filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March of 2024 to reorganize. With business conditions not upticking, Metro closed the Calexico 10 Theatre on May 3, 2026.
