In Vinaròs, a fishing port in eastern Spain, in the province of Castellon, the Cine Moderno, owned by Eduard Torres, opened in 1922. It was equipped for live shows, with a stage and dressing rooms, and, indeed, the inaugural presentation was a 10-day live show headlined by Vinaròs-born actress María Conesa, who had travelled from Mexico especially for the occasion.
As the Cine Moderno moved into the sound era, live shows continued, with the artistic group of the Centro Instructivo Republicano performing a play in 1934.
During the 1970’s, at least, the Cine Moderno was leased by Juan José Figuerola, who also operated the Coliseum Cinema and JJ Cinema in the town (see separate Cinema Treasures entries).
It is not known when the Cine Moderno closed.
It is assumed it has been demolished: The street number is not known, but could it have been replaced by the more modern JJ Cinema, which opened in 1984 in the same street?
