The single-screen Royal Theatre opened its doors on December 17, 1977 with Sean Connery in “The Spy Who Loved Me”. It was one of three foreign roadshow theaters that ran both foreign and American films. The Royal Theatre was located on top of the four-story “Royal Building” constructed by the Gifu Land Development Company. In its very later years, Japanese films were added to the schedule, which, as of 2026, is now its primary focus.
The Royal Theatre was very notable for the “Showa Masterpiece Cinema Screening”, a yearly-annual event that basically involves screening one or two films with a different theme for each session. At the entrance on the first floor of the building, there are rows of nostalgic handwritten signs. To get to the Royal Theatre on the fourth floor, there is an elevator that goes up to the fourth floor, but the escalator only goes up to the third floor, and beyond that there are stairs on the other side.
