Santa Barbara Drive-In

Opened by Robert L. Lippert Theatres on July 1, 1966 with Elvis Presley in “Paradise Hawaiian Style” being the main feature on both screens, with different 2nd features on each screen “John Wayne in "The Sons of Katie Elder” & Dana Andrews in “Johnny Reno”. This twin-screen drive-in closed in 1991 and operated as the West Wind Goleta Public Market for the following 19 years.

It was reopened on May 7, 2010 with only one screen, renamed Santa Barbara Drive-In. It was closed on April 19, 2019. It was reopened in summer of 2020 and closed on September 5, 2022.

Did they remove one of the screens at some point?

Yes. The southern screen had suffered damage from a storm. Since it faced the screen that was used only for the flea market, it was torn down.

For the record it was never “West Wind Drive-In” it was always the “Santa Barbara Drive-In”, it just so happened to be owned by West Wind Drive-Ins so the logos may have been prevalent.

Yes, this was a twin when it originally operated from 1966 until 1991.

Robert Lippert opened this drive-in on July 1st, 1966. Grand opening ad posted.
