Situated in Porto, northern Portugal, the Teatro Carlos Alberto, named after a Sardinian king who died an exile in the city in 1849, opened in October 1897. It presented a full range of live shows, including circuses, operettas and plays, until, by the late-1970’s, it was a full-time cinema.
It was then leased by the Secretariat of State of Culture. The renamed Auditório Nacional Carlos Alberto operated from September 1980 to March 2000, presumably with a live programme.
In 2001, the building was acquired by Sociedade Porto 2001, the organisers of Porto’s turn as European Capital of Culture. Following a renovation, overseen by architect Nuno Lacerda Lopes, in September 2003 the venue was ‘returned’ to the city as, once again, Teatro Carlos Alberto (now with 374 seats).
It operates in conjunction with the Teatro Nacional São João (see separate Cinema Treasures entry).
