Sala Estudio Perpetuo

Located to the north of the city of Porto, the Studio Cinema opened in 1966. The construction was partly funded by the addition of a car parking garage on the site, which means that the frontage does not look especially ‘cinematic’.

Although it was a cultural landmark during the 1970’s, the cinema faced difficult times in the 1980’s, and it closed at the end of that decade.

After laying unused for many years, the former cinema began a new life in October 2021 when it was re-opened by the religious charity Our Lady of Perpetual Help, who built a church at the rear and opened a private school and day centres for children and the elderly.

The project was a partnership between the Nossa Senhora do Perpetuo Socorro Charity Centre and Porto-based consultants Opium.

So far as I am aware, although the auditorium has been refurbished and upgraded technically, the cinema seating remains in situ and it appears basically as it was in 1966.

There is an electrically operated screen but there is no regular film programme, and I gather the hall is mostly used for school music and theatre presentations.
