Built in 1891, the Auburn Opera House was listed on Sanborn Maps 1912 at Lincoln Way and Lewis Street.

On July 4, 1913, the Auburn Theatre showed its first movie: Now showing high-class feature pictures and pho-to-plays, every Wednesday and Saturday evening at 8 p. m. Tonight Saturday July 4 “The Battle of Gettysburg”. On December 7, 1933, the Auburn Theatre showed its last movie. On December 14, 1933, the Auburn Journal reported an agreement between W.F. Jacobs of the Auburn Theatre and T&D Jr. executives of the State Theatre whereas the Auburn Theatre would remain closed. Film Daily Year Book 1935 lists the 320-seat theatre as closed.

On December 15, 1944, the Placer Herald reported the opening of the five-lane Opera Bowl in the old Auburn Theatre.

On October 3, 1957, the Opera Bowl burned down and the Herald reported the building would be torn down when the insurance company gave a go-ahead. Two old-time movie projectors were still in the building when it burned.

Today the Auburn Chamber of Commerce building occupies the land, just a half-a-block away from the Auburn State Theatre.
