Oriental Theatre

This small theatre appears on the 1911 Sanborn. It was located in a one story brick storefront, which was constructed sometime between 1892 and 1898, and had been a millinery up to at least 1906.

This was a very small building, not even especially deep, and was likely closed within a few years. The 1914-15 American Motion Picture Directory lists an Oriental Theatre. If this stayed open that long, it may be that was the name.

The 1922 map shows a restaurant here. The building today is in fair shape, although the cornice has been replaced with siding. It is currently a beauty salon.

Trade journals from 1913 and 1914 mention a W. C. Eddy of Marengo who was secretary of the Iowa Motion Picture Exhibitors' League, and the July 4, 1914 issue of The Billboard even devoted a large part of a page to a letter he wrote to them regarding the evils of censorship, but not once have I found the name of his theater mentioned. The only theater name connected with Marengo I’ve found in the trades is the Strand, and that never before 1940.
