The Capitol-Lichtspiele Theatre opened its doors on November 3, 1930 by Linden entrepreneur Max Scharnofske, and with its original capacity of 1,100 seats in orchestra & balcony levels, the Capitol-Lichtspiele Theatre was one of the larger theatres in the Leinestadt.
In the first years after World War II, the Capitol Lichtspiele Theatre (like many other cinemas in Hanover) was under the administration of the British military government, which initially used the representative auditorium for theater performances. The Capitol Lichtspiele was also the stage for Hanover’s first post-war variety show after the death of the war in 1945.
The Capitol Hannover closed as a movie house in the mid-1980’s, and was converted into a multifunctional event center with a discotheque and concert stage, which offered space for up to 1,800 people. After its reopening under the “Capitol” name on September 20, 1986, there were still occasional film screenings on its screen.
