Manring’s Opera House opened in 1905. At some point, it was programmed by local cinema legend, Charles Otto Brown. Under the “Opera House” moniker, the Manring brought in great talent. Movies were shown sporadically especially with traveling shows. But live acts is how the venue began.
By 1908, the name had moved from “opera house” to theatre. The Manring Theatre played more films to remain cost efficient. On March 12, 1920, it was all over as the theatre burned down. That fire also took the town’s telephone service, Dr. Inman’s office, a Singer sewing machine outlet, and the Lovett Millinery Store, and almost burned down its hospital causing $5,000 in damage.
Ten days after the fire, a Manring Theatre representative gave the good news that a new Manring Theatre was to be built. It would launch in 1922 and has its own Cinema Treasure page.
