Bob Mills CinemAssociates launched the Cinema Centre on December 6, 1975 with “Hound of the Baskervilles” and “Conduct Unbecoming.” The venue sported identical 300-seat auditoriums developed by Bi-Ni Development. A remodel brought seating count to 250 seats. Chakeres Theatre Circuit opted out of its lease closing the theatre on September 25, 1983 after a 24-week run of “Flashdance” and a double-feature of “Tootsie” and “The Survivors.”
Couldn’t have closed in February of ‘83 if Flashdance played there for 6 months. It was released in '83
This theatre was a retro fit form retail space. The floors remained flat and the ceiling was not lifted. I was not impressed with the completed project.
I saw quite a few movies here. Good screen size and seating for a small twin. Only thing perplexing is that the Dolby sound system often had static in the surrounds.
This must have been during his pre-eccentric years.
Plus, he was born in Gary, Indiana so I’m sure he knew where Ohio was.
Don’t forget that Michael Jackson walked out after a half hour of Deep Blue Sea (quite frankly, I don’t blame him).
What in the wide, wide world of sports was Michael Jackson doing there? I didn’t think he knew where Ohio is. He showed up once at my theatre in NYC to see ‘Deep Blue Sea’, accompanied by an entourage of 12 y.o. boys. MJ was wearing red pants, white shirt, really good italian shoes, and a bee-keepers hat, complete with netting. I suppose he was trying to be inconspicuous :–) so nobody would recognize him, after all, doesn’t EVERYONE in New York City walk around wearing a bee-keepers hat with netting??
Tim Ahern and then Mike DeSantis managed this theater in the late 70’s. Saw many movies here. Michael Jackson once came in and saw a film and at least this theater of Bob Mills didn’t burn down like the Cinema East did in 1972.
