The town’s second Royal Theatre replaced its first Royal Theatre that reportedly burned down. The new-build Front Street theatre needed its own electrical plant as the town’s electrical services hadn’t matured by 1920. The venue opened on May 15, 1920 with Pearl White in the first episode of “The Black Secret” along with a Harold Lloyd one reel comedy short and a Pathé newsreel.

On January 7, 1930, the venue inaugurated talkies with “The Viking” - a color silent film with an added soundtrack and the Hal Roach short, “Hurdy Gurdy”. The venue added widescreen projection in 1955 to present CinemaScope titles. It is believed that the venue reached its 40th Anniversary but not its 50th. The building housing the theatre has since been demolished.
