The Tomakomai Nichigeki opened its doors on December 23, 1956 as a 650-seat three-story reinforced concrete theater with a total construction of nearly ¥52,000,000, which is almost $361,275 in United States money.
It was twinned on July 12, 1986 following the closure of the nearby Asahikan Cinema almost three months prior. It had a capacity of 433 seats (with 257 blue seats in Screen 1 and 176 red seats in Screen 2).
Throughout its history, many films by Warner Brothers and Columbia Pictures were screened there. However, when the Sun Theatre, located across the street from the Tomakomai Nichigeki closed in August 2002, the theater continued to operate under an independent ownership.
Unfortunately due to the deterioration of the building and the opening of the seven-screen Dinos Cinemas Tomakomai, the Tomakomai Nichigeki closed for the final time on April 22, 2005 with “The Aviator” in Screen 1 and “Bridget Jones’s Diary” in Screen 2.
