By the mid-1890’s, traveling companies brought picture machines and orchestra musicians and presented this new theatrical entertainment.

‘…The first motion picture theatre, or “nickelodeon,” was opened in what had once been Rohm’s China Hall at 516 Washington Street, and the Bijou Theatre at 703 Washington Street was the next. The silent picture show lasted about 20 minutes and consisted of a single film reel and illustrated songs performed by a live orchestra.
