The Shop City Shopping Center was launched theatre-less in August 5, 1952 anchored by an Acme Food-o-Mat Supermarket and a planned W.T. Grant that opened in 1955. Montgomery Wards would also later build an anchor in the plaza. In 1970, Carrol’s Development announced an automated single-screen luxury suburban cinema would be located in Shop City Plaza. The 607-seat Carols Cinema Shop City launched with an invitational screening of “My Fair Lady” starring Audrey Hepburn on May 18, 1971, and a public opening the next night.
Carols operated the venue as Cinema Shop City under its subsidiary CinemaNational beginning in February of 1974. In June of 1986, USA Cinemas took over operation of the CinemaNational and the theatre became the USA Cinemas Shop City on October 16, 1986. It remained a single screen theater to its closing on February 29, 1988 with Denzel Washington in “Cry Freedom”.
