Situated in East Fife, some 10 miles south of St. Andrews, Crail Airfield originally opened in July 1918, but closed late in 1919 after being mainly used for aircraft storage.
The site lay dormant until the Royal Navy commissioned a new airfield. This opened on 1st October 1940 as HMS Jackdaw for use as a Torpedo Bomber Reconnaissance base.
After World War II, HMS Jackdaw was paid off on 28th April 1947. Immediately renamed HMS Bruce, the airfield was used as a training facility for boys from the age of 15. This only lasted for two years, but it was then used by The Black Watch in the 1950’s and St Andrews University Air Squadron until 1958. Between 1956 and 1960 the Joint Services School of Linguists was based at the site. The airfield was decommissioned in 1961.
It is now is one of the best preserved Second World War airfields in Britain. The whole site is Category ‘B’ listed.
Among the surviving buildings is the wooden-floored cinema/gymnasium, which was built around 1940.
