According to a December 1916 article in The Moving Picture World, the Gay Theater was built and opened in 1912 at the height of Portland’s motion picture theater boom. It was built by Van Scoy and Hauck and opened by S.S. Range. Constructed of reinforced concrete, the theater was fitted with 500 opera seats and was “handsomely decorated”. Projection was furnished by two Power machines. It was still in operation at the time of the eighth annual “Paramount Week” of 1925.
Today (2024) the site is occupied by a storefront nursery.
