Colonial Theatre

This theatre was open by 1922. It was located in a small stone storefront built sometime between 1900 and 1908.

Though very small, this seems to have been the only theatre in town, and it remained open until around 1955.

Around 1956, this building and a neighbor to the south were remodeled into one storefront. The current drab and ugly facade dates to yet another remodel at some point. It had been a funeral home, but is now a screen printing operation.

The October 9. 1954 issue of Boxoffice said that “O. A. Dickson is contemplating closing his Colonial at Alma, Kas., during December.” Dickson had run the Colonial since at least 1945, when he was mentioned in the April 7 issue of Boxoffice.

In a classified ad in the October 13, 1956 issue of Boxoffice 200 theater seats were offered for sale by Fred L. LaMar of Alma, Kansas. They probably came from the Colonial.

A “Blizzard” cooling system was installed in 1926.
