Fast-growing Gulf States Theatres decided the time was right to create Hammond’s first luxury twin cinema in 1973. The spot was the Town & Country Shopping Center that had launched theatre-less in 1971. Gulf States owned the downtown Columbia Theatre but single-screen downtown movie houses were on the way out.

The Town & Country Twin Cinema launched on February 9, 1973 with Willie E. Smith in “The Legend of Boggy Creek” on Screen 1 and Steve McQueen in “The Getaway” on Screen 2. One year later, the second twin would be opened when Southeast Cinemas launched the University Twin. Gulf would close the Columbia Theatre downtown and take over the University Twin after a buyout. Later in 1974, the Joy Drive-In added a screen to become the third twin screen operation in town.
