The Andrews Memorial Hall on the Ballygowan Road (close to its junction with Carnesure Terrace) was presented to Comber by the Andrews family. It was a tribute to Thomas Andrews Junior who had drowned in the Titanic tragedy in 1912 and was officially opened on 9th January 1915. The town’s first film shows took place here in the 1920’s.
The Kine Year Book - 1927 and 1931, lists A. J. (“Mickie”) White as proprietor and resident manager of the Grand Cinema. The location was the aforementioned Andrews Hall, where film shows were presented nightly with two changes weekly. It was a mixed-use venue which included space for dancing and other social activities. It appears that the hall ceased to be a cinema by early-1934. At the present time the hall is used extensively by Andrews Memorial Primary School and community groups.
