The ‘Grand Opening’ of the Amethyst Cinema was on Boxing Day, December 26th 1949 (Newtownards Chronicle, 24th December 1949). The report in the same paper (31st December 1949) says there was ‘a full house at the opening shows, indeed so great was the crowd that 150 had to be turned away.’ Full houses continued during the first week.
The regulations in force in the immediate post-war period would have ruled out the erection of a new building for entertainment purposes so presumably it was a conversion of an existing structure.
Another advertisement for this cinema, in the Newtownards Chronicle (7th January 1950), said it was ‘modern and comfortable in accordance with 35MM regulations’. The advertisements continued until 11th February 1950, then appear to have ceased (at least until the end of that year). The date of closure currently remains unknown as does the street address of the Amethyst Cinema.
