Initially it was opened as the City Picture House (Kine Year Book’s, 1933-1934). By 1935 it was known as the City Cinema and Western Electric(WE) sound had been installed. The K.Y.B. (1935) shows seating as 1,450 (a typo?) but in subsequent editions it’s 1,000. It had a 25ft wide proscenium.
The City Cinema was owned by City Pictures Ltd. and by 1955 the proscenium had been widened to 35ft to allow for CinemaScope. It was still open in 1969, but had closed by 1980.
