Paula Theatre

Showman’s Trade Review projected on January 17, 1948, that “The Paula Theatre in Mt. Pleasant, N. C, owned by a corporation of which H. D. Hearn is the head and Mrs. Dorcas M. Reinhardt is secretary and treasurer, will open on January 23, 1948 featuring the Warner picture "Always Together” starring Robert Hutton. The theatre is modern in every respect, and is claimed to be one of the nicest smalltown theatres in the state.“ A follow-up, published a month later, established the true opening date. "The Paula Theatre in Mt. Pleasant, N. C, opened Friday February 6, 1948 featuring Eagle Lion’s "Out of the Blue” starring George Brent. The theatre is operated by H. D. Hearn and D. H. Reinhardt of Exhibitor’s Service."

On February 4, 1948, Variety reported, “H. D. Hearn and Max Rhinehardt of Exhibitor’s Service (in Charlotte) have opened the Paula Theatre at Mr. Pleasant, N. C. The building includes offices and two stores”.

On May 16, 1951, Exhibitor magazine wrote, “Mrs. Esther Foil has taken over operation of the Paula, Mt. Pleasant, N. C.”.

The Independent Film Journal reported on September 18, 1954, that “Charles Tucker, owner of the Drive-In at Wadesboro, N. C., has taken over the Paula Theatre, Mt. Pleasant, N. C.”.

The Paula Theatre was still open in 1955, but had closed by 1956.

Theatre was named for a local woman, Paula Foil McMahan Julander.

Theatre is being renovated along with the revitalization of other buildings. The black brick facade has been removed which was placed over the original stucco. Image of it’s removal in the photo section. Also an image of a portion of the original marquee.

The Paula Theatre building is on S. Main Street. The address is not displayed on the building, but the building to the north houses a spa with the address 1476. If the northernmost storefront in the theater building is 1478, then the theater entrance would be at 1480 S. Main. The theater is one of a number of downtown Mount Pleasant buildings under renovation, and some photos of the project, including some interior shots, can be seen on this Facebook page.
